Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation, also known as Breast Implant surgery, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures today. Currently approximately about 100,000 breast implants are done for purely cosmetic purposes in the USA today. Considering the 'glamor' factor so prominent in today's world, it is not a co-incidence that Breast implant surgery is so popular!

It is not an understatement to say that "When you look good, you feel better and when you feel better, you look even better! We believe that the Beauty is Not Just Skin Deep. Though beauty is not everything, it makes a mountain of a difference in many peoples' lives.

Gravity plays a major role in the changes in the shape of the breasts just as it does in the rest of the body. Many other factors like genetics, age, hormonal influences, obesity weight loss, smoking, medical illnesses and surgery play very significant role in changes to the breast shape. Breast implants enlarge the size of the breasts but do not necessarily improve the shape of the breasts. The breasts are going to be heavier than before, and are subject to the forces of gravity over a period of time.

Silicone or Saline implant?

Today, after the silicone scare of the 90's, most of the implants placed in USA are Saline implants. Saline is non toxic and if the implant ever leaks or ruptures, the saline simply gets absorbed.

Placement of the implants and the location of the scars:

There are many ways to place the implants.

  • Under the gland: The implant is placed under the gland but over the pectoral muscles.
  • Under the muscles: The implants are placed partially under the pectoral muscles.
  • Under the fascia: The implants are placed under the thick lining covering the pectoral muscles without damaging muscles.

There are many approaches (site of the incisions)

  • Under the breast:  A small incision placed under the breast along the chest wall
  • Around the areola:  A small incision placed around the areola
  • Axillary:  A small incision placed in one of the natural creases the arm-pits
  • Umbilicus:  A small incision placed in the belly button

The choice and suitability of each approach or site of the implants depend on various factors and will be discussed in detail with you by Dr. Jay Appurao prior to the surgical procedure. Every patient will be individually evaluated for the best approach.

How long will the implants last?

All implants are expected to deflate over a period of time and need to be replaced. It may be as early as a few weeks or as long as 15 yrs. As of now it is not uncommon to have implants last for an average of 10 years. However the manufacturers give lifetime warranty on the implants and also, for a small fee, will pay for your future implant costs.

How safe is the surgery?

Breast implant surgery can be performed with extreme safety in a Hospital, Outpatient surgical centers or in an Office setting in General or Local Anesthesia. However, many patients prefer the office or out patient surgery centers because it is cost effective, more confidential, have lower rates of infections and provide a much more pleasant experience.

What are the complications?

Most complications are rare. Most of these are minor and simply improve with time. Some complications are merely imperfections that may be expected, accepted or acceptable and do not require further intervention. But some complications require minor surgical interventions. It is rare to get major complications that require removal or revision of the implants.

How much does it cost?

Costs for a breast implant surgery vary widely according to the surgeons, location of the facility, individual variations of the patients (such as re-operation after previous surgeries, etc.) and other surgical procedures that may be necessary ( such as nipple surgery) to get an optimal result. However you will find us very competitive because of our location. Please call us and be surprised!

I hope this provides a good 'start' to consider breast implants. There will be many questions that are beyond the scope of this introduction. Call Dr. Jay Appurao for a free consultation.
